    b)   Key References.
1.   “Toy Story (1995)” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Story

2.   Understanding animation, Paul Wells 1961- New York : Routledge, 1998.
Comment: This is a scholar book that contains lots of texts, pictures and good discussions on the origin and characteristics of animation. Althought there are many difficult word that I don’t know,  I think this book can helps me to understand animation and find useful quotation.

3.   Animation and America, Paul Wells. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 2002.
Comment: The book included many different aspects of relation of Animation and America. It provides an overview of possible approaches to the study of animation.  Also included some essay about my case study, Toy Story, it is a very useful resource for my case study.

4.   “Channel 4.com: Hollywood’s Family Values”. Channel 4.com. Retrieved 2008-12-31. It focuses mainly on relationship of animation and family. And the article is not very long and easy for me to understand.

5.   Pulses of abstraction: Episodes from a history of animation Diss. Johnston, Andrew; Gunning, Tom; Lastra, James; Tsivian, Yuri; Wild, Jennifer. The University of Chicago, 2011.
Comment:  It is a difficult book. It contains a lot of professional terms and difficult sentence structure. Only little information can apply in my presentation.

c)   Case Study - Toy Story Series
Toy Story Series produced by Pixar Studio and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
Toy Story Series include:
Toy Story1: Release on November 22, 1995
   Directed by John Lasseter
Toy Story2: Release on November 24, 1999
   Directed by John Lasseter
Toy Story 3: Release on June 12, 2010
   Directed by Lee Unkrich

Toy Story is a comedy-adventure animation film.It is also categorised as family movie. In the story, Toy Story follows a group of toys who pretend to be lifeless whenever humans are present, and focuses on Woody, a pullstring cowboy doll , and Buzz Lightyear, an astronaut action figure and their funny friends’s adventure story. In Toy Story 1. A little boy called Andy loves to play with his toys, especially his doll named "Woody". They come to life when Andy is not with them. Woody believes that he has a good life as a toy. However, he must worry about Andy's family moving, and what Woody does not know is about Andy's birthday party. Later Andy has a new favorite toy called Buzz Lightyear, who does not believe that he is a toy. Woody, who is now consumed with jealousy, tries to get rid of Buzz. However, both Woody and Buzz are now lost later and they must find a way to get back to Andy. In Toy Story 3, the toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.

Toy Stoy give a great impact in many aspects. It gave a large impact on the film industry with its innovative computer animation. Also,
various industries were interested in the technology used for the film.
Graphics chip makers desired to compute imagery similar to the film’s animation for personal computers and game developers wanted to learn how to replicate the animation for video games.
More and more film want to building artificial intelligence into the lifelike characters in the film.

In addition, one part I love best is Toy Story left an impact with its catchphrase “To infinity and beyond!”, sequels, and software, among others. In the story,  Buzz is a toy and cant fly.Woody argues Buzz’s ability to fly. Buzz has faith and proves he can. Finally, a miracle happen, Buzz really can. This reflect a Thomas theorom (a theory of sociology )states “It is not important whether or not the interpretation is correct--if men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.” I think it is very meaningful.

I like Toy Story series because it was the first feature-length film animated entirely by computer. And Toy Story series shows the development of the digital animation. The high technology animation produced by Pixar give us alots of High end quality animation, all the things in the movie become more realist so that increase audience’s entertainment, enjoyment. The story is lovely, and I think it is a masterpiece of love, friendship and family movie. This film is as chock-full of heart and warmth.

The question raised may be some people think that “Animated film is commonly perceived as children’s play and is often neglected as a serious form of cinematic art and previous accounts have tended to treat animation in isolation from broader currents in cinema.” However I don’t think so, I don’t think their kid’s films. I think animation like Toy Story series, is not only an animation, but a meaning film, and indigenous American art forms. Toy Story is the very humanist project and it is a modernism of a meditation of what it is to love, what is fundamentally human and what intrinsic values underpin our mortality.

I think, Animation is not only an entertainment and it can brings us happiness and hope. It let us to know the culture from the image and characters. Such as Toy Story, Woody and Buzz may symbolize Superheroes, western cowboy in USA, Which there are the essential culture in USA. Also, I think animation can help us to remind our childhood. Let us experience our happy childhood again and forgot our unhappy thing in the moment. Last but not lease, I think most of the Animation is educational, just like Toy story, it encourage us to treasure the things we have such family, friendship through the funny story of Woody and Buzz family.  I think all animation has its own value and worth to produce and watch. In 2005,Toy Story was selected into the National Film Registry as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. According to Paul Wells, an animation profession, Toy Story is the very humanist project and it is a modernism of a “meditation of what it is to love, what is fundamentally human and what intrinsic values underpin our mortality. I very agree with that.

In Past, Children were not encouraged to see moving pictures, because people think that moving pictures would corrupt kids. However Disney became the first major purveyor of cinematic family entertainment. Movie like Toy story become the family films. Cinema become a Family-friendly place, family can have fun when watching it. People now correctly realising that adults were quite happy for their inner child to be entertained with intelligence and style such as animation. They always avoided sex and violence, have correct attitudes toward them. Nowadays, animation always has a positive value and worth to watch.

Some important quotation to support my view include, Paul Wells, an animation profession, he think “animation is a unique art form, it is significant and worthy of study.” and “the animated film has much to tell us about ourselves, the cultures we live in, and our view of art and society. They are in the ways in which national and cultural context are re-imagined: In enunciating itself, Animation enunciates America: history, mythology, freedom.”
Also, according to DreamWorks animator Pierre PERIFEL animation is observing everyday details and conceive character identity create animated characters that are coherent and true to life.”

User Generated Digital Media

a) How many viewers are estimated to have watched the youtube video?
Since YouTube videos are free for people around world to want. There is over 41 millions people have watched this video. It shows that this video is popular and attractive.

b) How would you rate the video?

I will rate it as 0.5 star out of 5 stars, this 0.5 star is just for his dramatic and facial expression and exaggerate performance. The face of that man or girl is ugly, his/her sound are noisy and it is hard for me to hear what he said he shouting about. I really don't like it and I think it is very annoying, ridiculous and he/she is crazy.

c) Is it of high quality in technical terms? Is it interesting aesthetically e.g. camera angles, use of light, the narrative, and so on?
It is a low quality in video and didn’t include any filming technique. It just uses a fixed top angle without any changes. The yellow color lighting is bad to put on people’s face. It is just recording a mad person who is expressing his/her angry emotion and being crazy. It didn’t include any interesting aesthetic.

d) Does it raise interesting socio-cultural issues?
Yes, may be. It may be a new method (media) for people to express their feeling and emotion. They can say his or her complain out directly. After this video broadcast on YOUTUBE, many people try to follow this way to express their thought through the online video. People become enjoy in expressing their idea in this way. And some people make fun with this video and respond it by making funny others and pose online.

e) Do you think deserved the attention that it received from the Internet community?
Yes, although it is a nosy and meaningless video, it suggests a new way that people can express their feeling and it raises interesting socio-cultural issues and people’s feedback. Recording video may be the direct and better way for us to express emotion than words.

f) Briefly describe the video
"Leave Britney Alone!" is and online video taken by Chris Crocker. The video is about 2 minutes and the content is about defending the pop singer Britney Spears's comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. The video is a top shot, and face is the main focus. We can see clearly his facial expression. Since some cloths covered the background, so we are not sure where he was, may be at his bad.

g) Find at least one interesting video, based on Crocker’s or Bus Uncle, and upload it to your blog
                       http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdKaQL3_i5w

A primary student about 6to 7 years old was shouting their parent in a shopping mall and condemn them why don’t leave him alone. And people blame this boy don’t treat their parent even he is small.

h) Report some positive and negative comments about this new ability for computer users to make and widely distribute and respond to online films

Positive side is this kind of interesting video is a good entertainment, and we can know want interesting or serious things is happening around our community. Also, the cost of making this kind of video is low, money can be saved by avoiding booking venue, contacting agencies. But it may raise a lot of public concern. Since YouTube is a free platform that people can post any creation to it. People’s creativity may be increase by producing their creative video and express themselves. Now, YOUTUBE become a way that people can show off his or her filming talent.
The negative side is some video is real meaningless and the one who upload the video is just want to get people’s attention. Also, since we can’t sure whether the video is real or just some one pretend and act as an interesting video, we don’t know whether it is right or wrong and we don’t real clear what is happening in the video some time.
Also, it relate to privacy problem, because the producer may not get permission to take this video. The one who was show on the video may think it is unfair and feel sad.

Social Networking and Online Identities

1. What is identity?

Identity is come from Latin: identitas (“sameness”), is the relation each thing bears just to itself. The concept of sameness has given rise to the general concept of identity, as in personal identity and social identity. An entity can only be fully identical with itself. Any difference gives rise to a separate identity. Thus identity is whatever makes an entity definable and recognizable, in terms of possessing a set of qualities or characteristics that distinguish it from other entities. Also, Identity refers to the fact of being who or what a person or thing is, the characteristics determining this. (Wikipedia)

2. Interview classmates:

a) How many online identities do you have? What are they like?
-Venus: 3emails

-Minnie: 4emails

b) In what ways are they different to your “in person” identities?
-Venus: communication tool with friends on the Internet through Facebook, MSN, Yahoo, etc
-Minnie: (same as Venus) to communicate with friends through many different media such as email, msn, facebook.

c) What are some benefits of expressing one’s identity online?
-Venus: For expressing her love towards the person she loved, she set her identities by using the nickname of that person.
- Minnie: She set her identities base on her nicknames and her favorite stars.
Although, the identities may look a bit differently, all of them are things related to me.

d) What are some risks?
-Venus: some villain may steal her online identity/account and enter into them, and use her account to do illegal things, like online shopping, making deal with others.
-Minnie: if her identity is used by some bad guy, they may deceive her friends and harm them.

On your blog write a two paragraph report on a class member who has an interesting set of online identities (you may use pseudonyms ie fake names)

Nowadays, as facebook is becoming more famous, some people will use it to do bad things. For example, they will use fake account to create a fake identities like someone is boy but set she is a male in the account or use some handsome boy’s photo to pretend he is a boy with good looking, so that he can easily to meet girl on the face book.

Also, some of them will use facebook as a business promotion tool. They will
Create a company account in facebook and add many friends as it could online, so that the company can have many sales targets to promote its product. Some of them will pretend they are your friends by using a fake person identity on facebook. But his/her purpose is to sale the product of some company.

3. An example of an online digital artwork that explores identity:
Mouchette: www.Mouchette.org. Refer to Tribe and Jana, 66-67

a) Description
- subject matter
This is an artwork that the artist Martine Neddam uses a French girl who was raped and committed suicide as a virtual character and use the first person narration to express her point of view for this incident. In the website, she used a close up photo of a flower as the background, and it symbolize the girl’s innocent. Also, flies symbolize death.

- types of activities invited by the site
This website have many hyperlinks such as ‘name’ and ‘Tokyo’ for us to click and explore more information about the website. Also, we can leave our feedbacks one the website so that we can express our feeling or opinions and we can know the opinions of different people’s perspectives towards the same thing.

- style eg. colours, composition of pages/screens
The colors of the main page are colorful, but for the other pages are in black and red color only, so those to create terrible feeling. To make the audience focus more on the content, the composition and layout of the pages are in a simple design.

- Mood
May be the creator want to express the negative emotions. There are many terrible laugh sounds, and the color tone is wired, deadly, the whole website’s mood is horrible and sad. I feel very uncomfortable when checking this website.

b) the work is controversial because…
- Published comments
Most of the people cannot accept this website. Because it includes some terrible elements like a horrible taboo, blood and scared sounds are included. They think it is horrible and they don’t like it. Some of them want to explore it. Also, some people wanted to know whether it was created by a 13-year-old girl.

- classmates’ opinions
Some of them think that is horrible to check, they refuse to see it again, because it includes weird terrible pictures, sounds and color tone. Some of them are interested in the story and willing to click the hyperlinks and discover it. Some of them think that it is too simple.

c) A conclusion
http://www.mouchette.org/ is a website that make some of people( including me) feel scared and uncomfortable. Because it is a website that expressing the unfortunate dead of a poor French girl. The website includes some flower pictures, terrible laugh sounds, and wired color tone, and simple sentences describing the accident. Also, the website also provide space for viewers to leave comment on this serious things. I think it is a controversial artwork on the Internet.
